The service
An EV charge point is a dedicated circuit with its own protection, an earthing arrangement suited to the installation, and a unit that can manage its draw against the rest of the property's demand. Fitting the unit takes a few hours. Confirming the supply can take it, and arranging the circuit and protection properly, is what determines whether the installation is safe and reliable.
Load management is the part most often skipped. A 7kW charger is a substantial continuous load, and on a property with an electric shower, an oven and a heat pump the total can approach or exceed the incoming supply capacity. Load-managed installations monitor demand and reduce charging current when the rest of the house is drawing heavily, so nothing trips and no supply upgrade is needed.
Because we install automation and solar as well, chargers are set up to be useful rather than just present: charging scheduled into cheap overnight tariff windows, or driven by surplus generation during the day, with the whole thing visible in the same system as your heating and lighting.
What it costs to leave it
Charge points installed without a proper load assessment cause predictable trouble. The main breaker trips when the shower, the oven and the car are all drawing together — usually on a winter morning when everything is running at once. Occupants respond by charging only overnight and treating the daytime as off-limits, which is a workaround for an installation that was never assessed properly.
Earthing is the safety-critical detail. Charge point installations require specific earthing arrangements, and getting this wrong on certain supply types creates a genuine shock risk during a fault condition. It is not visible, it will not show up in normal use, and it is precisely the kind of thing a proper installation and certification exists to prevent.
The lesser cost is missed savings. A charger with no tariff scheduling charges whenever it is plugged in, frequently through the most expensive part of the day. A charger with no link to solar exports generation while simultaneously buying electricity to charge the car. Both are configuration issues, and both are avoidable at installation.
