R Electrical Solutions Ltd operates from a DE22 base on the north-west side of Derby, which makes the city our shortest journey of the working week. That matters more than it sounds: local jobs get surveyed quickly, snagging visits do not need a half-day of travel booked around them, and a commissioning tweak after handover is a short drive rather than a scheduling problem.
Ross Hutchinson has spent 16+ years working across domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations, including control panel and production-line commissioning on bespoke food-handling systems. In Derby that background shows up in unusual places — a Victorian villa in Strutt's Park with a rewire and a Loxone system going in together, or a small manufacturing unit off Ascot Drive that needs its lighting and HVAC brought under one controller.
Derby is not one housing type, it is half a dozen. Allestree, Littleover, Mickleover and Oakwood are dominated by post-war and later detached and semi-detached family housing with reasonable cable runs and loft access. Darley Abbey, Strutt's Park and the roads around Duffield Road hold older stone and brick properties, many in conservation areas, where surface containment is unacceptable and every route has to be planned before a single wall is chased.
Closer in, the city centre and the Cathedral Quarter mix flats above commercial units with converted mills and offices, so an automation or CCTV project often has to satisfy a landlord, a tenant and a building manager at once. Pride Park and the industrial estates on the south and east of the city bring the commercial and industrial side: three-phase supplies, panel work, emergency lighting, EICRs on lease renewal and building management systems that were installed by somebody who has long since stopped answering the phone.
Because Derby is our home city we also see the same recurring jobs: EV chargers being added to houses whose consumer units were last touched in the 1990s, garden lighting and power on the larger plots north of the city, and full whole-home Loxone systems in properties being extended or reconfigured rather than newly built. We plan those as one project, not as an electrician's job with a smart home bolted on afterwards.
Period and conservation-area homes
Stone and brick properties around Darley Abbey, Strutt's Park and Duffield Road where lath, solid walls and protected finishes rule out lazy cable routes. We survey and plan runs before first fix so the fabric of the building is not the thing that gets compromised.
Suburban family housing
Allestree, Mickleover, Littleover and Oakwood properties being extended, re-roofed or reconfigured. These are the classic candidates for a staged automation build — heating control and one room of lighting now, cabling in place for the rest later.
City-centre flats and conversions
Converted mills, offices and apartments where communal supplies, landlord consents and limited riser space shape what is possible. We work to what the building allows rather than promising what it cannot take.
Commercial and industrial units
Pride Park offices, retail units and the industrial estates south and east of the city. Lighting, HVAC, access control and panel work brought under one building management system, with RAMS issued before we start.
