Why specialists, not generalists
Home automation goes wrong for predictable reasons. The cabling was never designed for it. The lighting control circuits were split for a standard install. Three separate contractors each fitted their own hub, and nothing speaks to anything else. The result is a house that needs four apps and a phone call to change a dimmer setting.
R Electrical Solutions Ltd is an electrical contractor in Derby first and a smart home automation specialist second — which is the correct order. We carry out all aspects of electrical work under NAPIT Full Scope registration, so the first fix, the control strategy and the programming are all designed together by the same team. There is no gap between the electrician and the integrator, because they are the same people.
That background runs deeper than domestic work. Before founding the company, Ross Hutchinson spent years designing, building and commissioning bespoke control panels and conveyor systems for food-handling plants installed on sites around the world. Industrial control discipline applied to a private home is the reason these systems still behave properly in year five. You can see recent installs in our smart home and electrical project gallery, or read how to request references for our Derby electricians.

How it runs
No "from" pricing, because it would be misleading. You get a free initial consultation, then a chargeable design stage only once you decide to progress — followed by staged payments at first fix, second fix and completion.
01
We walk the property or site, listen to how you want it to work, and tell you honestly what is worth doing.
02
Once you decide to progress, we produce the design — system schematics, cabling and control strategy — so nothing is guessed on site.
03
Staged payments at first fix and second fix. One team, one standard of finish, no subcontracted unknowns.
04
Programming, testing, certification and a proper handover — then optional remote or in-person maintenance.
Where we work
Based in Derby (DE22), working across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire. If your project sits outside these towns, ask — commercial and automation work often travels further.
References
Client testimonials are being collected properly rather than written for us. In the meantime, ask and we will put you in touch with references and walk you through completed installations relevant to your project.
Before you enquire
No. There is no fixed package. Many clients start with heating control or a single room of lighting, with the infrastructure designed so the system can expand later without tearing walls open again.
We are an official Loxone Partner and lead with Loxone wherever it is the right fit, but we also design, install and programme Lutron, Rako, KNX, ClickSmart, HD Anywhere and Sonos systems.
Qualifying installation work carries a 6-year workmanship guarantee backed by NAPIT. All other work carries a minimum 1-year guarantee, with ongoing maintenance packages available after that.
No. Deliberately. Every automation and electrical project differs enough that a headline price would be misleading. The initial consultation is free, and you receive a written quotation before any commitment.
Yes — £10m public liability, £10m employers' liability and £1m professional indemnity. RAMS can be issued for any project on request.
Emergency and out-of-hours support is available on request for commercial and automation clients. It is not sold as a standard guaranteed service, but ask us and we will tell you what we can do.

The initial consultation is free and there is no obligation to go further. You will get an honest view of what is worth doing, what it involves, and where to start.
